Rebecca’s Choice is the third book in the Adam’s County trilogy by Jerry Eicher.
A brief synopsis from Harvest House Publishers:
Popular Amish fiction author Jerry Eicher finishes the Adam’s County Trilogy with an intriguing story of a young couple’s love, a community of faith, and devotion to truth.
Rebecca Keim is now engaged to John Miller, and they are looking forward to life together. When Rebecca goes to Milroy to attend her beloved teacher’s funeral, John receives a mysterious letter accusing Rebecca of scheming to marry him for money. Determined to forsake his past jealousies and suspicions, John tries hard to push the accusations from his mind.
Upon Rebecca’s return, disturbing news quickly follows. She is named as the sole heir to her teacher’s three farms. But there’s a condition—she must marry an Amish man. When John confronts Rebecca, she claims to know nothing. Soon Rachel Byler, the vengeful but rightful heir to the property, arrives and reveals secrets from the past. Now the whole community is reeling!
I haven’t said anything about the antagonist in this series, but I can’t keep quiet any longer! Oh boy, does Rachel find ways to cause trouble!
If I am to be honest, I will have to admit I am ready to contact Jerry and ask if he has actually known someone like “Rachel” who is (or was) Amish. This character is so nasty! She is deceitful, vindictive, hateful, willful, judgmental, manipulative… well, I think you get the idea.
We get just an idea of how hateful she is in the first book; in the second much more of her characteristics come out. The third book shows how much hurt she causes her immediate family, as well as those in her community and in Wheat Ridge.
This character was so entirely unexpected, I kept looking for her to come under conviction and have a change of heart, to confess her sins… but it never happened. However, I will say that I was pretty satisfied with the ending of the book.
Jerry does a superb job finishing out the story of Rebecca and John. I cried with them, I fretted with them, and I rejoiced with them. Great trilogy, Jerry!
After reading this trilogy, I cannot wait to get to the next series. I have just finished collecting the series Hannah’s Heart and tonight I’ll be starting on A Dream for Hannah. I’m just as sure as can be that this series will be every bit as wonderful as the Adam’s County trilogy!
