Today I am reviewing The Secret to Hummingbird Cake by Celeste Fletcher McHale.
Here is a brief synopsis:
“Why won’t you just tell me what’s in that cake?” I’d been trying to get Laine’s recipe for years. We all had.
When all else fails, turn to the divine taste of hummingbird cake.
In the South you always say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” You know everybody’s business. Football is a lifestyle not a pastime. Food—especially dessert— is almost a religious experience.
And you protect your friends as fiercely as you protect your family— even if the threat is something you cannot see.
In this spot-on Southern novel brimming with wit and authenticity, you’ll laugh alongside lifelong friends, navigate the sometimes rocky path of marriage, and roll through the outrageous curveballs that life sometimes throws . . . from devastating pain to absolute joy. And if you’re lucky, you just may discover the secret to hummingbird cake along the way.

I had absolutely NO idea that this story would touch my heart the way it did. I laughed, cried, laughed, and cried some more. I’m glad I didn’t start it at bedtime, because I refused to put it down until I was finished.
Carrigan, Ella Rae and Laine. Three of the best characters I have enjoyed knowing. They are the perfect examples of friends — true friends — with a friendship that lasts forever!
Celeste Fletcher McHale has written a “top shelf” book — one that I’ll keep and someday pass down to my daughter and granddaughter. The author lets the characters be “real” — but even with a bit of profanity and some pretty tough situations, I never even slowed down when reading it.
Surprisingly enough, this is a debut novel! I look forward to reading more from Celeste Fletcher McHale.
Please don’t read this without a box of tissues nearby — you’ll need them. Oh, and the recipe that Carrigan keeps asking about. It’s even better than I hoped.
Don’t wait another minute. Get your copy today… you’re gonna love it!!!
God Bless You!
