Nominating A MOTHER FOR LEAH by Rachel L Miller for an INSPY award!

Join me in nominating this heart-warming book for an INSPY award!

Click on the image to visit nomination page

I enjoyed this wonderful story of hope and healing and family togetherness. Rachel has brought Amish romance back to where I feel it belongs.

I reviewed A Mother for Leah by Rachel L Miller when it was released. You can read that POST for my full review, but I’ve posted a snippet of that review below as well as the blurb for the book itself.

I was hooked from the first page…

Rachel L Miller writes with great depth and emotion. Her characters are well-developed and entertaining, and the story will leave you with feelings of love, hope and joy. If you enjoy reading Amish romance stories, you’ll LOVE reading A Mother For Leah.

ABOUT A Mother for Leah:

Will Leah Fisher find love because of a buggy accident?

Could love soften her heart so that she is able to see her answered prayers in Naomi Yoder or will she drive a wedge between her father and the only woman he has shown interest in since Elisabeth Fisher’s death?

Leah Fisher lost her mother ten years ago. She is rapidly approaching womanhood and the lack is becoming more difficult every day.

Will she be able to recognize love when it’s right in front of her?

Could love be the key to Leah opening her heart, making room for the woman her father intends to marry… or will she stubbornly cling to the memory of her own mother?

Will Leah be able to let go of her own ideas and realize that God truly does know best for her or will she allow love to slip through her fingers, destroying Samuel Fisher and Naomi Yoder’s happiness at the same time?

I hope you’ll join me in nominating this wonderful debut novel. I feel it deserves to win!

BEHIND THE SCENES:

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT A Mother for Leah
      THE INFO BELOW CONTAINS SPOILERS!

1. The prologue for A Mother for Leah did not exist in the rough draft. It was added later—then removed at the request of an interested agent, then added back in at the request of the agent Rachel signed with.

2. Initially, Leah was a very unlikeable character. Fortunately, with edits (and the addition of a secondary romance), Leah became the charming, sweet girl we see in the final story.

3. The name of Leah’s father’s love interest changed four times before the author settled on Naomi.

4. A Mother for Leah is book 1 in a series. At the moment, there are three books proposed and contracted.

5. There is a companion series proposed, though it has not been finalized at this time.

6. A Mother for Leah takes place in upstate New York and, though Windy Gap is a fictional community that the author created, there are “real” Amish settlements in the area that inspired this novel and several others.

7. Leah is mentioned briefly in Naomi Miller‘s Lemon Tart Mystery – book 3 of her Amish Sweet Shop Mystery series. And yes, before you ask, a crossover has been discussed with the authors

8. The shop in Windy Gap named Sew Sweet is not a misspelling. It is an intentional play on words because the neighboring shops “Sew Sweet” and “SewNice” are owned by quirky sisters who thought it was a clever marketing ploy that customers would enjoy.

9. A Mother for Leah was written during Rachel’s very first NaNoWriMo session. (Yes, she won)

10. Rachel was introduced to Amish fiction (as a reader) and to the idea of writing Amish fiction—by her mother

Today I am reviewing A Mother for Leah by Rachel L Miller.

I was hooked from the first page…

I could easily picture a little girl, standing on her porch, then rushing through the pouring rain to the waiting buggy… I’ve lost both parents and both sisters and I’m the last family member, so I’m sure you’ll understand when I cried buckets at the funeral. The rain falling on the big, black umbrella seemed totally appropriate.

Ten years pass and Samuel Fisher has remained single, albeit a difficult thing to do in his Amish community. Even after ten years, Leah is still missing her mother, while caring for her father and brothers. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll let you read it and discover what happens when Leah’s father decides it’s time to search for a wife.

Rachel L Miller writes with great depth and emotion. Her characters are well-developed and entertaining, and the story will leave you with feelings of love, hope and joy. If you enjoy reading Amish romance stories, you’ll LOVE reading A Mother For Leah.

A Mother For Leah is the first book in the Windy Gap Wishes series… I’m thrilled to help promote this awesome book — and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

A Christmas Gift for Rose | Tricia Goyer

17679334

Today I am reviewing A Christmas Gift for Rose by Tricia Goyer.

Here is a brief synopsis from Goodreads:

Rose turned her back on the man she loves after he assisted the Englisch during World War II—only to discover she’s an Englischer herself.

Born in the midst of the hardships of The Great Depression, Rose grew up in Berlin, Ohio, in the arms of a loving Amish family.

But she is overwhelmed by self-doubt when she learns that she was born Englisch and abandoned when her family moved West in search of work.

Was she meant to be Amish or would she have been better off growing up with her own kind—Englischers?

When the man she loves leaves her behind, Rose is certain he left for good.

Yet Rose discovers sometimes our greatest gifts are the ones we fear.

MY THOUGHTS:

A Christmas Gift for Rose is a wonderful story. There is conflict and resolution. The characters and the story are very believable…

I found myself too often looking up occasionally and being surprised that I wasn’t “in the midst of the story”.

This Christmas story is truly a wonderful, inspiring story.

Tricia led me on lots of twists and turns that I did not see coming. That’s something I’ve come to appreciate; too often a story is predictable — this one is not!

And click HERE for Tricia’s website!

God bless you!

Swept Away | Laura V. Hilton Marathon

Swept Away
by Laura V. Hilton and Cindy Loven is a special Quilts of Love collaboration

Quilts of Love… every quilt has a story…

Here is a brief synopsis from Goodreads:

Sara doesn’t think she wants love. But her grandmother has other plans.

Sara Jane Morgan is trying to balance teaching with caring for her ailing, stubborn grandmother.

When school lets out for the summer, the plans are for Grandma to teach Sara Jane to quilt as they finish up the Appalachian Ballad quilt Grandma started as a teenager.

But things don’t always go as planned.

Andrew Stevenson is hiding from his past — and his future. He works as a handyman to pay the bills, but his heart is as an artisan, designing homemade brooms.

When Sara Jane’s grandmother hires him to renovate her home, sparks fly between Drew and his new employer’s granddaughter.

Still, it doesn’t take Sara Jane long to see Drew isn’t what he seems. Questions arise, and she starts researching him online. What she discovers could change her life — and her heart — forever.

MY THOUGHTS:

The last thing I expected when I began reading Swept Away… was a match-making grandma (which reminded me a bit of my favorite series – come back next month to read all about it)… and bless her heart, she’s got a load of problems -– and a big solution!

Unfortunately, she also has two very uncooperative individuals — who balk at every suggestion. Does she give up? Would any self-respecting grandma? No way! She has seem the way they look at each other and she’s determined to see her plans work out for everyone involved.

Sarah Jane started out as someone I didn’t know if I’d like or not… but her grandma is determined to match her with the local handyman, Andrew. Andrew is a bit rough at the beginning, too… but he quickly becomes my favorite character!

As Sarah Jane begins reading his trail journals and learns how he begins to let go of his past hurts, she discovers that he found God in an unexpected place, and how his whole life changed. As Sarah Jane gets more involved in her grandma’s life – and Drew’s – she wants the peace Drew found, but she doesn’t think it’s possible.

With God, all things are possible…

I honestly had no idea when I began reading Swept Away that I would end up with a book that spoke volumes to me. It has all my favorite elements: faith, love, humor, romance, and forgiveness.

If you’ve read Laura’s books, then you know that her books are blessed by God. I don’t think this is the norm for many authors. Laura says she prays – a lot – over her books.

I haven’t read anything else by Cindy Loven, but I look forward to reading more from her… and I can’t wait to see what’s next from Laura!

Get your copy… and prepare to be swept away!

So come back this weekend, when I’ll be interviewing Laura… and talking more about some new books on the horizon.

A White Christmas in Webster County | Laura V. Hilton Marathon

A White Christmas in Webster County
by Laura V. Hilton is a special Christmas novel that brings together the characters from both of Laura’s first two series, The Amish of Seymour and The Amish of Webster County.

Here is a brief synopsis from Whitaker House:

A Mother’s Helper

Mercy Lapp is ready for a fresh start. Having lost her beloved fiancé in a fishing accident during his rumschpringe, she escapes the painful memories by moving from her community in Shipshewana, Indiana, to Seymour, Missouri, where she takes a job as a mother’s helper. She isn’t exactly shy, but she’s hesitant to get involved with the youth in the community because she isn’t going to stay. She especially doesn’t want a new romance.

An Adventurous Hero

Abner Hilty is excited to see his twin brother, Abram, for the first time in years. The two fled their hometown of Shipshewana when their witness of a murder put their lives in danger, Abner heading to Montana to work on a ranch and hunt big game, Abram meeting a girl in Missouri, marrying, and settling down there. Abner decides to spend the holidays with them in Seymour, but he has every intention of returning to Montana, maybe even for good.

An Unexpected Snowstorm

At a chance encounter, Abner is immediately drawn to Mercy, and even more so when he realizes that they’ve met before, back in Shipshewana. Initially alarmed, Mercy soon warms to his attentions, even though she keeps him at arm’s length. She also branches out and begins attending youth functions, forming new friendships that are solidified during a rare snowstorm. Just when Mercy and Abner are beginning to think about a long-term relationship, Mercy gets a phone call that changes everything. The information would have been welcome months ago, but now that she knows Abner, she’s torn, and she will have to do some serious soul-searching to decide how to act on it.

MY THOUGHTS:

I had no idea… when I began reading A White Christmas in Webster County that I would NOT be able to PUT IT DOWN until I finished it… I even went back and re-read the last few pages…

IT WAS THAT GOOD!

Seriously… if you loved reading the other books in the Amish of Webster County series, you’re really gonna LOVE this one! My daughter will agree – since she found me reading in bed last night — a little past midnight, because I was determined to finish it.

IT’S SO GOOD !!!

The story is wonderful and original and even better – it brings back characters we met in Laura’s first two series, The Amish of Seymour and The Amish of Webster County.

This is most definitely not a story you have seen over and over, and it certainly isn’t a plot you would ever expect to see in an Amish Fiction story – as a matter of fact, many of Laura’s books have plots that you would never expect to read in an Amish fiction story… but it works! Perfectly!

It’s a wonderful thought to be assured that, while their faith may differ somewhat and the way they live is more plain than most (if not all) of us, the Amish really are not so different from us!

Laura V. Hilton is an AMAZING author…

In two separate interviews I recently read, she said that she writes, edits the previous days writing, writes more, and when she finishes the book, it is done – no rewriting, except for minor edits and the final read-through.

If you’ve read Laura’s books, then you know that her books are blessed by God. I don’t think this is the norm for many authors. Laura says she prays – a lot – over her books.

Well, it certainly shows… they’re wonderful!

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see what’s next from Laura!

The Snow Globe | Laura V. Hilton Marathon

The Snow GLobe
is the first book in The Amish of Jamesport series by Laura V. Hilton.

Here is a brief synopsis from Goodreads:

A Compassionate Young Woman

Esther Beachy enjoys working for an elderly woman who is wheelchair bound. Her client, Anna Petersheim, is pleasant and tells captivating stories. Plus, her home is quiet and far more peaceful than Esther’s, with so many siblings.

She only dreads the day when Anna’s grandson, Viktor, will return from the river to take over the farm. She and Viktor were classmates years ago, and he’d been an obnoxious flirt who paid attention to every girl but her.

A Toughened Riverboat Captain

A seasoned riverboat captain, Viktor Petersheim has seen his share of trials. He left the Amish after the death of his parents and siblings in a house fire for which he still feels responsible.

Now, after years of working on the Mississippi River, he returns home to claim the farm he inherited from his grandparents and, hopefully, to repair some of the damaged relationships and broken hearts he left in his wake.

Love off the River

When Viktor arrives home, it doesn’t take long for him and Esther to realize their mutual attraction. Even so, their relationship remains as tumultuous as a shaken snow globe, like the one Esther finds at a garage sale and gives to Viktor’s grandmother as a token of affection.

Viktor isn’t the only man with an eye on Esther, and soon it looks as if she’s ready to make a future with someone else. Will the two go their separate ways again? Or will the hand of God work something beautiful out of their angst and agitation?

MY THOUGHTS:

The Snow Globe, in my opinion, is the best sort of novel to read…

The characters are likable and easy to relate to; they are loving and considerate… and they are interesting. Too many times I’ve read novels with characters I have nothing in common with, and they’re not appealing in the least; Laura V. Hilton excels at creating characters that appeal to her readers – readers of Amish fiction, especially Amish romance.

Of course, you can’t have a hero without a villain… but even so, he makes the book great; I just love reading about him getting what’s coming to him!

It’s too easy to picture quiet Esther taking care of Anna and Reuben, while waiting for Henry to propose. Then there’s Viktor… tall, handsome, self-assured, needing the love of a good woman, yet feeling as if he doesn’t deserve happiness. And don’t forget Henry, who seems to have feelings for another girl, but is determined to marry Esther.

Can Esther break through Viktor’s defenses? Or will she marry Henry?

I love the easy, comfortable relationship between Esther, Anna and Reuben. When Viktor comes home to help out, he’s not looking for a relationship, but the moment he meets Esther, he finds her unforgettable… and irresistible! This makes for a great romance novel.

Throw in my favorite genre – Amish fiction – add some fun, intrigue, angst, lies, jealousy and pain… and you have an exciting, memorable story! Don’t miss out on this wonderful novel.

Awakened Love | Laura V. Hilton Marathon

Awakened Love
is the third book in The Amish of Webster County series by Laura V. Hilton.

Here is a brief synopsis:

A Bashful Baker–

Twenty-one-year-old Katie Detweiler loves to bake. When she’s hired at a local bed-and-breakfast to do just that, she’s excited, especially because the owner promises the shy young woman that she won’t have to leave the kitchen.

But when her boss’s husband requires round-the-clock care, Katie is forced to overcome her shyness and wait on customers, as well. Before long, a “customer” reveals himself to be a private investigator who informs Katie that she was adopted, and that her biological sister needs a bone marrow transplant.

A Man on the Run–

Twenty-two-year-old Abram Hilty has fled the drama of Shipshewana, Indiana, for Seymour, Missouri, where he’s staying with his cousin Micah Graber. His plan is to hide, from a girl he no longer cares about and also from a cold-blooded killer.

Uncomfortable sharing his past and afraid of the consequences, he buries his troubles deep inside. When he meets Katie Detweiler, he is immediately attracted, but his pursuit of her is complicated by the problems of his past.

An Adventure Unfolds–

As Katie wrestles with questions of identity, she also struggles to navigate her blossoming romance with Abram, in the face of opposition from a jealous friend.

As their relationship becomes more serious, Abram can no longer conceal the truth about his past. But parts of that past rear their heads, barring the way for a marriage between them; at least for now. Through dangers and near-death experiences, Katie and Abram must find their way back to each other.

But only the power of forgiveness can bring them together for good.

MY THOUGHTS:

Oh my… what an amazing story!

Without giving away too much – trying to stick to facts given in the synopsis – I want to talk about how much I enjoyed reading Awakened Love. This story has everything!

We first met Katie in Healing Love… towards the end of this story, Katie’s family had moved to Ohio for several years and had just recently returned to Webster County. There’s not much else in this first book of the series on Katie, except the explanation that she grew up with Kristi and Janna… and that Kristi was looking forward to renewing her friendship with Katie.

In Surrendered Love, Katie, Krista and Janna are close friends again; in this story, Katie tells her friends that she’s landed a job at a nearby bed and breakfast. Janna tries to play matchmaker for Katie and Micah (who just moved to their district recently), but Micah ends up taking both girls home from the singing. (To find out what happens, be sure to read this second book of the series if you haven’t already).

In Awakened Love, Katie is pretty much on her own… working full-time at the bed and breakfast. Kristi and Janna are both good friends to Katie, but things are just not the same — if you’ve read books one and two, you’ll understand that their lives are much different now. And Katie is having her own troubles…

First, her not-so-much of a friend Patsy gives her a hard time – disrupting her work, talking badly to her – and about her, even being abusive to her… hard to believe, I know, but even in the Amish community of Webster County, there are girls that behave badly – and Patsy seems to be the worst!

I’ll be honest with you – I got so made at that girl, I was ready to scream!

But this is part of what makes Laura V. Hilton such a great writer – she doesn’t try to write about perfect Amish communities… she writes about real, true-to-life Amish communities! Even if I don’t like patsy, I am quick to agree that she makes the story sound true, and if she weren’t so bad, the hero wouldn’t have the chance to be so heroic!

This book is the pièce de résistance!

I was continually amazed at the secrets that cropped up… and the budding romances, although Katie’s courtship seems to have as many difficulties as the ones in the first two books of this series. This story definitely has some serious moments, as well as a few funny moments, too – such as when Abram tries to teach Katie how to play baseball, and ends up with an almost-broken nose!

But hey, don’t take my word for it… read it for yourself… read the whole series!

Surrendered Love | Laura V. Hilton Marathon

Surrendered Love
is the second book in The Amish of Webster County series by Laura V. Hilton.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Janna Kauffman enjoys her job as a personal shopper for the homebound in her Amish community.

But when Janna’s niece, Meghan, comes to live with her family, part of a plan by Janna’s sister to rid her daughter of her rebellious ways, Janna spends less time shopping and more time explaining Meghan’s erratic behavior to local police officer Hiram “Troy” Troyer, who was raised Amish but left the faith after a fatal accident that killed his brother and also a brother of Janna’s.

Frequent interactions draw Janna and Troy together, rekindling an attraction they first experienced in their youth.

What will become of their relationship? And will headstrong Meghan ever tame her ways?

MY THOUGHTS:

I am more and more thrilled with each book… and each series… written by Laura V. Hilton! She’s an absolutely amazing writer!

The first book in the series caught me off guard with a bit of a different story line than usual… when I began reading this book, I was tickled pink to find the same sort of story line – it’s fun, unique, and exciting, to boot.

When this story begins, Janna is shopping and runs into Hiram Troyer, the boy she always hoped would want to court her… we first heard of Janna and Hiram in Healing Love, but Hiram had already jumped the fence (left their Amish community)…

In this amazing story, Janna and Hiram, who goes by Troy now that he’s living as an Englischer, are brought together again and again when her niece Meghan keeps getting into trouble.

Janna and Troy have a past — but it’s difficult to guess whether they’ll have a future or not, since Troy is sure that even if he wants to join the church, he won’t be allowed to, because of something that he did just before he took off and left the community.

Although Janna is determined to stay in the church, the fact that her dat is the bishop is another factor to consider — but if Troy won’t come back, what will she do?

The solution in this novel is as interesting as all the stories in Laura’s books. She has such a talent for creating awesome characters. If I go to Seymour, I would not be surprised to find Janna and Troy… and their families — they’re that real to the readers.

I want to include my thanks to my daughter for contacting Ms. Hilton to request that she be my featured guest author on my book blog for November – thanks, Rachel!

Surrendered Love is every bit as wonderful as the first book in the series, Healing Love… and I can’t wait to read the third book in the series, Awakened Love… I can begin on it tonight.

If you enjoy reading Amish novels, read Surrendered Love… and if you enjoy reading good Christian romance novels, you’ll really love the entire series!
