An Amish Miracle | Mary Ellis, Ruth Reid, Beth Wiseman

Today I’m reviewing An Amish Miracle, by three of my favorite Amish authors… Mary Ellis, Ruth Reid, and Beth Wiseman.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Always in My Heart by Mary Ellis

Hope Bowman believes God is punishing her for giving up her firstborn son when she was a teenager. She’s hidden this secret from her husband, who is thankful for their daughters but longs for a son. Hope prays desperately, but the son God sends her isn’t a new baby but the fifteen-year-old boy she gave up years ago.

Always His Providence by Ruth Reid

Widow Rosa Hostetler has one month to pay her delinquent taxes before the county auctions her farm. She’s prepared to sell whatever is necessary to pay the lien, but she isn’t willing to request money from the community s widow fund. She s embarrassed and refuses to admit she needs help. Rosa depends on income from selling eggs, but when that income is threatened, only a miracle can help Rosa accept the kindness of a neighbor.

Always Beautiful by Beth Wiseman

Becky Byler is eighteen and overweight. She is overwhelmed by the embarrassment she feels when comparing herself to other girls her age. Having lost all hope, she considers taking her own life. As she stands before rushing water, unable to swim, Becky begs God for a miracle. In just several months, Becky sees her prayers answered as food and temptation lose their hold over her. She’s finally pleased with how she looks, but does she like the person she has become? And has the man she has dreamed of been right beside her all along, loving her exactly as she is?

An Amish Miracle is a book of amazing miracles… read it today! Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

I love it when three stories are connected… it’s like one long story.

Always In My Heart is the first novella and is by Mary Ellis… this story is about teenage adoption and it is such a wonderful story; I cried along with Hope as she shared her feelings about losing her son and believing that God was punishing her.

Hope Bowman has lived with a mistake for more than fifteen years… it wasn’t difficult to feel her pain, especially her feeling that she’s being punished because of her past. Although her parents made the choice – so it was really their mistake – and she wasn’t given a choice, she has always felt responsible for giving up her child.

Honestly, I could NOT stop until I had read the entire story. Always in My Heart is a GREAT Story! When you begin reading, you will begin wondering if things will ever work out, and if so, how it could all work out for everyone; I don’t want to give anything away, so I won’t say anymore – you can read it for yourself, but be assured that Mary Ellis does a superb job of bringing it all together in a fabulous story!

Always His Providence is the second novella and is by Ruth Reid. This story is about Hope’s best friend Rosa, who has a little problem with pride… not something unheard of – even among the Amish. Although she is committed to being Amish, Rosa’s pride may just cause her to lose her farm!

If you follow my blog, you’ve already figured out that I’m thinking “shame on you, Rosa. Just ask for help!” Poor thing, she’s wallowing in fear, but she’s determined that she’s going to go it alone! I didn’t think the story of a lonely widow would appeal to me much but it really did. It was amazing.

First one thing, then another, comes along to derail Rosa’s plans to save her farm. I won’t say any more, so that I don’t run all the wonderful surprises you’ll find in this amazing story! If you enjoy reading a story with lots of surprises, you’ll love Always His Providence!

Always Beautiful is the third (and last) novella, and is by Beth Wiseman. We’ve been reading about Becky Byler during the previous stories, but this story is just about Becky! After wishing she could lose weight for much of her life, she finally loses all the extra pounds she desires to lose… but does it make her happy?

Well, she thinks it does – at first.

I would never have imagined that Amish girls would have to deal with weight issues. Who could have guessed? And even if they did, would pride or self-image really matter to them? After all, wouldn’t they care less about the outward appearance and more about good character qualities?

But… maybe even young Amish men and women get caught up in appearance. Beth Wiseman writes a beautiful story. I found myself feeling Becky’s pain, and yet, I could feel the pain of other characters as well and it was enlightening and heart-breaking as well.

This story shows us that sometimes… even if God’s answer is yes, it’s not always the best thing for us.

An Amish Family Reunion | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing An Amish Family Reunion, a fourth book in the Miller Family series by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

During a rumschpringe visit to Niagara Falls, Phoebe Miller meets Eli Riehl, a young man who charms her — and everyone else — with his exceptional storytelling ability.

When Phoebe sketches scenes to illustrate one of his tales, Eli encourages her incredible talent, and together they embark on a lofty and unlikely business venture for two young Amish people — writing and illustrating a children’s book.

Eli’s kindness and appeal extend beyond his knack for words to reach inside Phoebe’s heart. But he is an only son with five sisters, and when his father suffers a heart attack, Eli gives up his writing to assume responsibility on the farm.

Though willing to abandon his dream of becoming an author, he won’t give up his beloved Phoebe.

Can their love for a good story develop into something that lasts forever, or will Phoebe’s deep-seated fear of desertion stand in their way?

MY THOUGHTS:

I don’t want it to be over!

I really don’t… I’ve gotten to know the Miller Family and all their assorted relatives and friends in the community — and I’m really going to miss them.

My daughter even teases me about wishing I could move to their community and spend time with Julia, Hannah, and the others. Oh, but that would be grand!

Unfortunately, all these wonderful people are just found in the novels by Mary Ellis.

Well, to be sure, there could be many people in an Amish community that are very much like these characters – and I just might find myself meeting some of them some day soon.

In the meantime, I guess I’d better say a bit more about how wonderful this series is…

I thoroughly enjoyed reading each novel, but especially this last one, An Amish Family Reunion, which is perfectly named. Julia is missing her children — and grandchildren — so much so that Simon tells her to contact each of them to come home for at least two weeks for a family reunion.

Reading through the story, we find that each son or daughter is having their own unique troubles… will a trip home help them to find a solution? You know I won’t give away much, so you’ll just need to read the book to find out what happens with Emma, Matthew, Leah and Henry, as well as their cousin Phoebe.

Yes! It just keeps getting better and better!

Mary — you’ve done it again… and I can’t wait to begin reading your next series — the Wayne County series.

The Way To A Man’s Heart | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Way To A Man’s Heart, the third book in the Miller Family series by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Leah Miller is living her dream come true as she invests in a newly restored diner that caters to locals rather than tourists.

Can Jonah Byler convince this shy, quiet young woman that she should leave her adoring fans and cook only for him?

Leah’s sister, Emma, is trying to adapt to married life as New Order Amish along with her husband, James, who gave up his Englischer ways to make Emma his bride.

Will his commitment to Emma and to God stand firm when temptations from his past come to call?

Ellis offers readers another captivating novel filled with strong characters and a loving look at how faith in God and connection with family can fill to overflowing an open, waiting heart.

Will Leah have a chance with Jonah – once her day in court has come?Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Yes! It just keeps getting better and better!

I don’t know how Mary Ellis writes such true-to-life Amish fiction, but she does a superb job!

The characters in this series aren’t just centering on romance — or young love. Indeed, I have cried along with Julia, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. When she finally couldn’t handle the increasing pain, she and Simon knew they could count on their children to handle things at home, while she underwent surgery and rehabilitation.

Simon, Julia’s husband, has been prominent in each book, not only as a deacon in the community, but as a husband coping with his wife’s debilitating disease, and a father advising his children when they’ve come to him with their troubles.

I don’t know if it’s harder being the child of a deacon or bishop, but it makes sense that everyone in the community would be watching to see how the elders in the church are teaching their own children. When Emma falls in love with an Englischer, Simon isn’t pleased. Read Never Far From Home for Emma’s story…

Nor is he happy when Leah, his youngest daughter, receives a subpoena to appear in district court to answer charges for the crime of tax fraud. It seems that Leah has let pride and vanity into her life, allowing her to make some very bad decisions. Now all her savings is gone and her name — and even her reputation — may be ruined.

I loved reading about Julia and Simon’s sons, Matt and Henry, and how they continue to seek their father’s guidance, while behaving in a grown-up manner and taking responsibility for their lives.

I’m not going to say much more about this story… you can read The Way to a Man’s Heart and enjoy the story without reading the others, but there’s so much more depth if you take time to read this series in order.

Join me in reading about Julia and Simon, Hannah and Seth, and their children… as well as many characters from their community and the surrounding area.

Now I’m on to book 4… An Amish Family Reunion — it’s time to lose myself in Holmes County, Ohio… one last time.

Find out if the way to Jonah’s heart is truly as the old saying goes…Tweet this!

Never Far From Home | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing Never Far From Home, the second book in the Miller Family series by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Fifteen-year-old Emma Miller finishes school, starts her own wool business, and is longing for someone to court.

When the object of her affection is a handsome English sheep farmer, with a fast truck and modern methods, her deacon father, Simon, knows he has more than the farm alliance to worry about.

Emma isn’t the only one with longings in Holmes County.

Her aunt Hannah wants a baby and her uncle Seth hopes he’ll reap financial rewards when he takes a risk with his harvest. But are these the dreams God has for this Amish family?

With engaging interactions and thoughtful characters, Ellis weaves a story about waiting for God’s timing and discovering that the dreams planted close to home can grow a lasting harvest of hope and love.

What happens when an Amish girl’s prince charming is an Englisher?Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Wow! What a story!

I have read dozens of Amish novels, but I love surprises — and this story definitely has some unique qualities about it…

For example, Seth seems like an ordinary Amish widower when we meet him in A Widow’s Hope, but in Never Far From Home, we get a totally different idea of who he is — and how his life seems to be changing, since his marriage to Hannah.

Yes, he’s following the Ordnung rules — and one of these rules speaks of living within your means and not planting more than your family and community needs — yet Seth is determined to sell off livestock and deplete their savings (much of which came from the sale of Hannah’s previous home) to lease acreage and plant corn — in the hopes that his crop will yield a huge profit.

Of course, he’s not wanting to “get rich quick” like most of us would be thinking about; he’s wanting to help fill the now-depleted community medical fund. Yet he’s taking chances that are causing troubles with his wife — and his brother. Thankfully, he begins to listen to his wife – and his brother — and when trouble comes, he’s ready to face it, with his wife’s love and support.

And Emma… who doesn’t listen to the wise counsel of her family — and gets involved with an Englischer!

Mary Ellis writes about such wonderful families — not just their joys and the good times – but the problems, trials, setbacks — all the makings of real life.

Join me in reading about Hannah and Seth, Julia and Simon, all the children… you can pick up Never Far From Home and catch up easily — or go back and read A Widow’s Hope if you haven’t had a chance yet.

One word of advice… you might need a few tissues before you’re done.

Now I’m ready to move ahead… with The Way to a Man’s Heart — and it’s time to lose myself in Holmes County, Ohio… again.

A Widow’s Hope | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing A Widow’s Hope, the first book in the Miller Family series by the incomparable Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

A bright new voice shares a tender love story set in the rolling green fields of Ohio Amish country.

After the death of her husband, Hannah Brown is determined to make a new life with her sister’s family.

But when she sells her farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and moves with her sheep to Ohio, the wool unexpectedly starts to fly.

Her deacon brother-in-law finds just about everything about Hannah vexing.

When his widower brother shows interest in the young and beautiful widow, the deacon turns to prayer for guidance.

Hannah thought she could never love again, until she meets the strong, gentle farmer. Unfortunately, Seth Miller’s only interest is in Hannah’s sheep. He is content in his bachelor state and slow to recognize his daughter’s need for a new mother.

Yet God offers Seth the perfect solution to their problems if he could only open his heart again…and love.

An outspoken widow, an independent widower – is romance possible?Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

What a wonderful story!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this great story — not what I expected — much more sassy! That’s the way I would describe Hannah Brown. Is she stubborn, willful, independent – or just trying to make her way the best she can…

Hannah moves from Pennsylvania to Ohio, to help her sister, but ends up alienating her brother-in-law — and his brother. After a visit from the elders of the church, things don’t look too good for her.

Wow! I feel like I already know Hannah and Seth, Julia and Simon, all the children, and the others in the community. Mary Ellis is an excellent storyteller; her characters are so vivid, I can’t wait to meet them… wait a minute, they’re not really real… hmm.

All right, so I get a bit carried away — but you probably will, too. I sat beside Seth and Hannah at the auction, I tasted and smelled the onions and grilled peppers on their sandwiches, and my mouth watered at the thought of tasting the chunks of dark chocolate in the ice cream!

So is everything going to work out? I’m not telling… you’ll have to read A Widow’s Hope to find out… but there are lots of surprises along the way.

In the meantime, I’ve just picked up Never Far From Home off the bookshelf – and it’s time to lose myself in Holmes County, Ohio…
