Protected | Vannetta Chapman

Today I am reviewing Protected, the second novel in the Jacobs Family Series by Vanetta Chapman.

Here is a brief synopsis from Goodreads:

ERIN JACOBS doesn’t hesitate when she receives a desperate call in the middle of the night. As owner of the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, it’s her job to rescue animals. But from the start, this case is different.

The woman’s frantic plea.
Directions to a deserted hunter’s cabin.
Insistence that she come alone.
Then she’s looking down into a washtub at an infant child.

Erin’s life changes irrevocably when she becomes involved with a mother who has lost all hope, an orphaned child, millions of dollars and a father who might do anything to get his hands on the money.

Social worker TRAVIS WILLIAMS is assigned to her case. Travis sees more in Erin than someone who rescues strays. She’s unconventional, strong-willed, and caring. It could be that she would make the perfect parent for Josh.

Before he can work through his feelings and file his report, the situation takes another dangerous turn. Can Erin and Travis guarantee Josh’s safety? To do so, they’ll need to rely on one another, their families, and the faith of their childhood.

Vannetta Chapman writes inspirational fiction full of grace. Her novel, Falling to Pieces, won the 2012 ACFW Carol Award for best mystery. She writes Amish mysteries for Zondervan, Amish romances for Harvest House and Amish novellas for Thomas Nelson. All of her books have been Christian Book Distributor bestsellers. Protected is her second inspirational romantic suspense. Chapman lives in the Texas hill country with her husband, pets and a herd of deer

PROTECTED — don’t miss this AMAZING mystery by Vannetta Chapman!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

PROTECTED

Romance… Suspense… Danger…

I loved — loved — LOVED this story!

In the first book of the amazing Jacobs Family series, HIDDEN, I got to know Dana Jacobs and Ben Marshall really well – and I couldn’t wait to find out how they were doing… and Vannetta doesn’t disappoint in the least. She brings Dana and Ben to the next book, with a cool update.

In the meantime, PROTECTED is all about Erin, Dana’s little sister. Erin is amazing – just like her big sister Dana – as she goes toe-to-toe with a social worker!

Erin, who owns the Noal’s Ark Animal Shelter, doesn’t turn down any animals – no matter what type or condition they’re in. So when she gets a call in the middle of the night, she goes… but she doesn’t find an animal; she finds a tiny baby! And what does she do? She takes him home…

Read about the danger Erin finds herself in – not only with the baby’s father – but with the local social worker, who seems to be trying to help her – or is he? I’m not telling… I’m not saying anything else about what happens, except that it is an AMAZING story and you’ll LOVE it!

Vannetta Chapman has a remarkable talent for writing. I’ve never read anything by Vannetta that I didn’t like (and I can’t say that about too many other authors).

Trust me when I say this is an awesome read and you will enjoy every moment of it!

PROTECTED is a great addition to the world of romantic suspense…Tweet this!

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

“Swan Lake” meets Robin Hood when the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant by day becomes the region’s most notorious poacher by night, and falls in love with the forester.

Jorgen is the forester for the wealthy margrave, and must find and capture the poacher who has been killing and stealing the margrave’s game. When he meets the lovely and refined Odette at the festival and shares a connection during a dance, he has no idea she is the one who has been poaching the margrave’s game.

Odette justifies her crime of poaching because she thinks the game is going to feed the poor, who are all but starving, both in the city and just outside its walls. But will the discovery of a local poaching ring reveal a terrible secret? Has the meat she thought she was providing for the poor actually been sold on the black market, profiting no one except the ring of black market sellers?

The one person Odette knows can help her could also find out her own secret and turn her over to the margrave, but she has no choice. Jorgen and Odette will band together to stop the dangerous poaching ring . . . and fall in love. But what will the margrave do when he discovers his forester is protecting a notorious poacher?

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of Robin Hood meets Swan Lake… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Melanie Dickerson re-tells fairy tales better than anyone else… I’ve never read another fairy tale I’ve enjoyed as much as her Medieval Fairy Tale Retellings.

This is a wonderful adaptation of two such fairy tales — Swan Lake meets Robin Hood. This book is a perfect blend of stories, in my opinion. Melanie has done a wonderful job representing both in her newest book, The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest.

And I do so appreciate how Melanie writes amazing fairy tales without any of the magical or fantasy fluff, but is always certain to add the good, strong Christian values that we all need to read about today.

Somehow, Melanie has been able to bridge the gap between adult — and young adult — audiences, without losing any of the fairy tale quality that her books are famous for.

And… it goes without saying that I will NOT be writing any spoilers — or telling anything that would ruin the book for any of my readers! If you want to know what happens, you MUST read the book!

So… get out there, buy the book… and read it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Just remember… if you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Princess Spy | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Princess Spy, the fifth book in the Fairy Tale Romance Collection series by Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Margaretha has always been a romantic, and hopes her newest suitor, Lord Claybrook, is destined to be her one true love.

But then an injured man is brought to Hagenheim Castle, claiming to be an English lord who was attacked by Claybrook and left for dead. And only Margaretha — one of the few who speaks his language — understands the wild story.

Margaretha finds herself unable to pass Colin’s message along to her father, the duke, and convinces herself ‘Lord Colin’ is just an addled stranger. Then Colin retrieves an heirloom she lost in a well, and asks her to spy on Claybrook as repayment.

Margaretha knows she could never be a spy — not only is she unable to keep anything secret, she’s sure Colin is completely wrong about her potential betrothed. Though when Margaretha overhears Claybrook one day, she discovers her romantic notions may have been clouding her judgment about not only Colin but Claybrook as well.

It is up to her to save her father and Hagenheim itself from Claybrook’s wicked plot.

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of The Frog Prince… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Margaretha’s story is a wonderful version of The Frog Prince… it just might be the best one yet. There were many things I never saw coming — always a plus in my opinion — rather than the predictable ho-hum stories that many authors churn out today.

Poor Margaretha thought her future was settled; she would marry Lord Claybrook and live happily ever after. But when a man shows up, she is the only one who can speak his language. Even worse, he claims to have been attacked by Lord Claybrook!

In my opinion, The Princess Spy is an outstanding Christian Fairy Tale… but none of the ridiculous magic or nonsense; Melanie writes about good, strong Christian values!

The fact that The Princess Spy was a bit more difficult to read was, in fact, my problem. It’s just that it begins very sad… as so much of life does. However, it is very intriguing and I was pulled into the story by the time I had reached the end of page two.

There was fast-paced adventure full of surprises and unexpected plot-twists — Melanie sure knows how to keep me on my toes!

Of course, I won’t tell you how things turn out… but… I can tell you that Margaretha goes the distance!

If you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Captive Maiden | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Captive Maiden, the fourth book in the Fairy Tale Romance Collection series by Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Happily Ever After…Or Happily Nevermore?

Gisela’s childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father’s death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother.

So when Gisela meets the duke’s son, Valten–the boy she has daydreamed about for years–and learns he is throwing a ball, she vows to attend, even if it’s only for a taste of a life she’ll never have.

To her surprise, she catches Valten’s eye.

Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of Cinderella… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

The Captive Maiden… possibly my favorite, so far…

Choosing a favorite is like trying to choose which cupcake is better — the one with the yellow frosting or the one with the green frosting… they’re both delicious, but my favorite is probably the one I’ve just taken a bite out of — it’s so yummy!

I think Gisela is the most inspirational “Cinderella” I have ever encountered. No matter how despicably she’s treated, she returns good for evil. This is the pure, selfless, beautiful person that Lord Hamlin — Valten — is drawn to in a way he has never before experienced.

Melanie Dickerson excels at creating realistic characters, even in her retelling of fairy tales that far surpass the good — and bad — in most people. I read this story — and I want to meet Gisela and Valten, Sophie and Gabe, Annabel and Ranulf, Rose and Wilhelm.

There — now I’ve said much more than I should have… if you want to know how it ends read it for yourself. And I most certainly can recommend that you read it for yourself – it’s SO GOOD!

I must say, I wasn’t sure what to think of Valten, when introduced to him in The Fairest Beauty. He seemed someone who was only interested in participating in tournaments and proving himself as the victor in the games. But he is so much more… Valten is most definitely a hero!

Surprises… oh yes, Melanie writes a wonderful Cinderella story, with lots of surprises, and emotion, and inspiration! Characters so true-to-life, you find yourself believing in them – but even more important, believing in yourself.

If you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Fairest Beauty | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Fairest Beauty, the third book in the Fairy Tale Romance Collection series by Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

A daring rescue.
A difficult choice.

Sophie desperately wants to get away from her stepmother’s jealousy, and believes escape is her only chance to be happy.

Then a young man named Gabe arrives from Hagenheim Castle, claiming she is betrothed to his older brother, and everything twists upside down. This could be Sophie’s one chance at freedom — but can she trust another person to keep her safe?

Gabe defied his parents Rose and Wilhelm by going to find Sophie, and now he believes they had a right to worry: the girl’s inner and outer beauty has enchanted him.

Though romance is impossible — she is his brother’s future wife, and Gabe himself is betrothed to someone else — he promises himself he will see the mission through, no matter what.

When the pair flee to the Cottage of the Seven, they find help — but also find their feelings for each other have grown. Now both must not only protect each other from the dangers around them — they must also protect their hearts.

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of Snow White… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Are there any good stepmothers in fairy tales?

I certainly can’t think of any! The Fairest Beauty is a wonderful story, with poor Sophie as our beloved Snow White. The duchess is indeed very bad – evil would better describe her – and Sophie is doomed… or is she?

The characters in The Fairest Beauty are marvelous! Sophie is the kind, sweet-hearted young girl you would expect; after growing up with an evil duchess telling her how wicked and ugly she is, Sophie is the epitome of goodness. Melanie Dickerson creates characters who cry out to God for help, for wisdom, for strength to overcome the evil. This is an excellent choice to make for something inspiring to read.

Of course, I cannot tell you how things turn out… but… maybe I can give you just a glimpse. Sophie had been told by one of the servants that if she could just reach the Cottage of the Seven, she would be safe there. The seven… totally not what I was expecting, but it was brilliant!

And… if it follows the fairy tale, then it turns out well… NO, I’m not giving anything away – everything doesn’t work out, but come on, we know it has to end well, right?

But if you want to know how it ends you’ll have to read it for yourself. And I most certainly can recommend that you read it for yourself – it’s SO GOOD!

No beast in this one… but definitely a hero!

Once again, Melanie includes lots of surprises along the way, just the way real life happens, and as I’ve said before, that’s just one more reason the stories by Melanie Dickerson are so believable – and awesome!

If you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Merchant’s Daughter | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Merchant’s Daughter, the second book in the Fairy Tale Romance Collection series by Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

An unthinkable danger. An unexpected choice.

Annabel, once the daughter of a wealthy merchant, is trapped in indentured servitude to Lord Ranulf, a recluse who is rumored to be both terrifying and beastly.

Her circumstances are made even worse by the proximity of Lord Ranulf’s bailiff a revolting man who has made unwelcome advances on Annabel in the past.

Believing that life in a nunnery is the best way to escape the escalation of the bailiff’s vile behavior and to preserve the faith that sustains her, Annabel is surprised to discover a sense of security and joy in her encounters with Lord Ranulf.

As Annabel struggles to confront her feelings, she is involved in a situation that could place Ranulf in grave danger. Ranulf’s future, and possibly his heart, may rest in her hands, and Annabel must decide whether to follow the plans she has cherished or the calling God has placed on her heart.”

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of Beauty & the Beast… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Oh my gosh! It’s so romantic!

The Merchant’s Daughter is so much better than the story of Beauty and the Beast… with wonderful, boisterous characters — that at times seem to be easily led astray (like so many of us).

I can honestly admit — I lost lots of sleep — but it was SO worth it!

Thankfully, it turns out… well, what can I say…

Ha! You know me well enough by now to know that I’m not going to give much away, especially the ending. That would totally ruin the whole book for you!

If you want to know how it ends you’ll have to read it for yourself. And I heartily recommend you read it for yourself.

Yes, there’s a beast, but a far more realistic one… a hero!

There are lots of twists and turns, with many surprises along the way — some good and some bad — but that’s the way real life happens! That’s just one more reason the stories by Melanie Dickerson are so believable — and awesome!

If you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Healer’s Apprentice | Melanie Dickerson Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Healer’s Apprentice, the first book in the Fairy Tale Romance Collection series by the wonderfully talented Melanie Dickerson.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Two Hearts. One Hope.

Rose has been appointed as a healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle, a rare opportunity for a woodcutter’s daughter like her. While she often feels uneasy at the sight of blood, Rose is determined to prove herself capable.

Failure will mean returning home to marry the aging bachelor her mother has chosen for her—a bloated, disgusting merchant who makes Rose feel ill.

When Lord Hamlin, the future duke, is injured, it is Rose who must tend to him. As she works to heal his wound, she begins to understand emotions she’s never felt before and wonders if he feels the same.

But falling in love is forbidden, as Lord Hamlin is betrothed to a mysterious young woman in hiding. As Rose’s life spins toward confusion, she must take the first steps on a journey to discover her own destiny.

Don’t miss this Medieval Retelling of Sleeping Beauty… by Melanie Dickerson!Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Wow! I could not believe this was Melanie Dickerson’s debut novel…

Within a few minutes, I was lost in an enchanted world with castles and cobblestones… until the very end.

I loved how Lord Hamlin noticed Rose – right from the start! Even though he visited her – and danced with her – he always remained chivalrous, even though he wanted to be with her.

But honestly, I wanted to smack Rose when she let herself be deceived by someone she had been warned was not honorable… but handsome young men can be very persuasive – and young, innocent girls are easy prey. Rose may have enjoyed his supposed affection for her, especially after feeling unloved by her mother, but thankfully she never allowed herself to go too far with him.

This story reminds me that evil exists – and it’s not always ugly, but sometimes can be wrapped up in a pretty package. The right path is not always the easy path, but it’s the right choice. Melanie did a wonderful job showing how difficult it can be to make the right choice, especially when others are urging you to take the other path.

Melanie Dickerson’s characters are perfect – well written, entertaining and represent the same values and flaws of the heroes and villains that inspired them.

Melanie is such an awesome writer! It is amazing how she weaves stories from classic fairy tales, creating her own stories – believable stories – and uses them to tell a story of hope, love and faith.

If you enjoy reading exciting, medieval fiction… with a happily ever after, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Last Heiress | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Last Heiress by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Bestselling author Mary Ellis presents The Last Heiress, a new romantic standalone that intertwines the lives of a British manufacturing heiress and an American merchant caught in the turbulent time of the War Between the States.

When Amanda Dunn sets sail from England for Wilmington, North Carolina, she hopes to somehow restore shipments of raw materials for her family’s textile mills, which have been severely disrupted by the American Civil War.

Though there is not much one individual can do, the wealthy young woman feels she must try, as her mother and hundreds of employees at Dunn Textiles are dependent on Southern cotton.

When Amanda meets Nathaniel Cooper, her desire to conduct business and quickly return to England changes. Though captivated by one another, neither is fully aware of the other’s true nature.

Nathanial, who on the outside appears to be a poor but hardworking merchant, is actually a secret Yankee sympathizer who will stop at almost nothing to bring about freedom for those who live under subjugation, even when that involves questionable judgment. And Amanda’s wealth is made possible by underpaid workers living in slums around the mills, not much different than American slavery.

Can these two earnest souls find the best in one another rather than focus on what could tear them apart? And though they both believe they are on God’s path, how will their decisions affect those around them?

Finding love was not part of Amanda Dunn’s plan…Tweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Mary Ellis made me a huge fan when I began reading her Amish series…

The Miller Family series
The Wayne County series
The New Beginnings series

…but I never expected to become a fan of a Civil War series!

Mary Ellis writes wonderful Civil War romances — filled with excitement, danger and impossible to put down until you’ve reached the end!

She crossed the sea… to save a legacy…

This book is actually a stand alone, although it certainly fits into the “Civil War Heroine” category. Mary Ellis introduces all new characters in this book — we’ve been reading about women who have lost everything because of the war — money, homes and family.

The Last Heiress introduces Amanda Dunn, who is not only an heiress, but most definitely not from the North or the South – she’s from England!

And I must say, I loved that there were characters I found it easy to love, yet some that I found myself “loving to hate”. Mary Ellis excels at creating realistic, intriguing characters for her stories. And the setting made me want to plan a trip to North Carolina, especially to check out the historical areas in the state.

If you enjoy reading historical fiction, you won’t want to miss The Last Heiress!

The Lady and the Officer | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Lady and the Officer, the second book in the Civil War Heroines series by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Bestselling author Mary Ellis (A Widow’s Hope) presents The Lady and the Officer, Book 2 of her new Civil War historical romance series, which tells the stories of brave women and the men who love them.

Serving for a brief time as a nurse after the devastating battle of Gettysburg, Madeline Howard saves the life of Elliot Haywood, a colonel in the Confederate Home Guard.

But even though Maddy makes her home in the South, her heart and political sympathies belong to General James Downing, a soldier from the North.

However, Colonel Haywood has never forgotten the beautiful nurse, and when he unexpectedly meets her again in Richmond, he is determined to win her. But while rubbing elbows with army officers and cavalry generals and war department officials in her aunt and uncle’s palatial home, Maddy overhears plans for a Confederate attack in northern Virginia.

She knows passing along this information may save the life of her beloved James, but at what cost? Can she really betray the trust of her family and friends?

Maddy’s heart is pulled between wanting to be loyal to those who care for her and wanting to help the man she believes is on the right side of the conflict. Two men love her. Will her faith in God show her the way to a bright future, or will her choices bring a devastation of their own?

Don’t miss the Civil War Heroines series… by Mary EllisTweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:

Love, Loyalty, and Espionage…

Recently I was introduced to Mary Ellis’ Civil War series… and I discovered that Civil War romances are just as exciting and romantic as Amish or contemporary romances.

What an amazing series!

If you want to know how a lady can possibly live with all three — love, loyalty, and espionage — read The Lady and the Officer.

Mary Ellis introduces new characters in this second book of the series, with many of them union and confederate soldiers.

How difficult is must have been for Madeline Howard to leave her home — and James Downing, a general in the Union Army. At her aunt’s home she meets Colonel Elliott Hayward of the Confederate Army.

Whoa! Talk about a difficult position to be in!

When Maddy learns of Confederate plans for the Union Army, will she pass it on in the hope of ending the war quickly? Even if it could save James, she would be betraying her family… and Elliot.

Mary’s characters are full of life; they seem as real as the people I see read about in the news. They make the same mistakes and feel the same emotions.

If you enjoy reading historical fiction, don’t miss this wonderful series!

The Quaker and the Rebel | Mary Ellis Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Quaker and the Rebel, the first book in the Civil War Heroines series by Mary Ellis.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Emily Harrison’s life has been turned upside down. At the beginning of the Civil War, she bravely attempted to continue her parents’ work as conductors in the Underground Railroad until their Ohio farm was sold in foreclosure.

Now alone, she accepts a position as a governess with a doctor’s family in slave-holding Virginia. Perhaps she can continue her rescue efforts from there.

Alexander Hunt is the doctor’s handsome nephew. While he does not deny a growing attraction to his uncle’s newest employee, he cannot take time to pursue Emily. Alex is not at all what he seems — rich, spoiled, and indolent.

He is the elusive Gray Wraith, a Quaker leader of Rebel partisans. A man of the shadows, he carries no firearm and wholeheartedly believes in Emily’s antislavery convictions. The path before Alex and Emily is complicated and sometimes life threatening. The war brings betrayal, entrapment, and danger to both of them.

Amid their growing feelings for each other, can they find faith in God amid the challenges they face and trust in the possibility for a bright future together?

Don’t miss this Civil War Heroines series… by Mary EllisTweet this!

MY THOUGHTS:
What happens when a yankee Quaker and a southern reb get together?

Read the book!

Recently I was introduced to Mary Ellis’ Civil War series with Romance on the River, the prequel to The Quaker and the Rebel… and I was immediately hooked on Civil War romances!

What a shock for me!

Until recently, I had never read a Civil War novel that I had truly enjoyed. I certainly can’t say that now!

In January 2015 I reviewed a World War 2 romance and was immediately caught up in it. This week I discovered that Civil War romances are just as exciting to me! …at least those by Mary Ellis. Just read the book.

Mary Ellis blew me away, not only with the young Quaker girl who does whatever she can to help the slaves she meets along the way, but also with the illusive and intriguing Gray Wraith!

Mary’s characters don’t read like simple characters; instead she creates characters that appear like REAL people – with flaws, weaknesses and real, true emotion – good and bad!

If you enjoy reading historical fiction, please don’t miss this wonderful series!
