An Angel By Her Side | Ruth Reid Marathon

Today I’m reviewing An Angel By Her Side, the third book in the Heaven on Earth series by the amazing Ruth Reid.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Katie has lived through tragedy and heartache. But with the angel Elias by her side, the best years of her life are just ahead.

When Katie Bender’s fiance died in a tragic accident, so did her hope of finding love. Though heartbroken, Katie is also practical. In the years since the accident she has discovered her gift for teaching.

But when a tornado destroys her small Amish settlement, including the schoolhouse, Katie doesn’t know how she will provide for herself.

Seth Stutzman arrived in Hope Falls days before the storm. And when he helps usher Katie and the children to safety, sparks fly. But Seth is only in town to help his brother, Amos, get back on his feet following the death of his wife. He can’t afford to have feelings for Katie.

Rebuilding the community is a huge task, and soon, Katie and Seth are working side by side. As they privately wrestle with their feelings for each other, another silent–and ultimate–battle for their hearts rages unseen.

Sworn to protect what God has ordained, the mighty angel Elias appears to them as a mysterious visitor. And with his guidance, Katie and Seth find the courage to take the first small steps toward the life, and love, they were destined for.

MY THOUGHTS:

When Katie Bender’s fiancé dies in a tragic accident, so does her hope of finding love…

We were introduced to Katie in the first book of this series, The Promise of an Angel. In the second book, Brush of Angel’s Wings, we get to know Katie just a bit more. And in this book, Katie has set aside the idea of marriage and has settled in as teacher for the community schoolhouse.

When a tornado destroys much of the small Amish settlement, including the schoolhouse, Seth Stutzman comes to the aid of teacher Katie and her students. Although Seth had arrived just days before to help his brother after the death of his sister-in-law, he feels compelled to stay and help with the rebuilding of the community. With an angel’s guidance, can Katie and Seth find the courage to begin a life together?

As Amos finally turns his heart back towards God, he hears the angel’s words – and cries out to God!

Ruth Reid does a superb job showing how an evil spirit whispered negative thoughts to Seth’s brother Amos, causing him to stay angry and discouraged… and she shows how God is watching over this community and sends an angel to combat the demon – at the appropriate time.

Ruth’s characters are true-to-life, and believable; I found myself getting attached to them. The story kept a tight grip on me and I identified easily with the angry and discouraging thoughts that we all tend to face at times, as well as the encouragement that comes when we need it most. Ruth wrote a most enlightening series with angelic and demonic spirits – one that I will not soon forget.

I wept as I read this heart-warming story; so thankful that there are books available to encourage us… Read this book with a box of tissues nearby; you’ll need them!

I will definitely recommend this series to everyone.

Brush Of Angel’s Wings | Ruth Reid Marathon

Today I’m reviewing Brush of Angel’s Wings, the second book in the Heaven on Earth series by the wonderful Ruth Reid.

Here is a brief synopsis:

He doesn’t plan to stay Amish. She doesn’t have a plan… then an angel draws their hearts toward God . . . and each other.

A buggy-racing champion, a hardworking field-hand, and a terrible cook, Rachel Hartzler does not fit her Amish community’s standards for an eligible bride. Hurt by their rejection and still grieving the loss of her brother, Rachel is ready for change.

She’s not, however, ready for Jordan Engles. Rachel’s father hired him to help tend the fields so Rachel can learn to cook and sew, thus increasing her chances of finding a husband. She can’t understand why her father doesn’t want her help and blames Jordan for trying to replace her beloved brother.

Jordan plans for his time on the Michigan farm to be short. Before his mother passed away, he promised her he’d give her Amish roots a chance. Upon her death, uncertain about what else to do, he came to stay with his Uncle Isaac in Hope Falls. He’s curious why his mother left the community she obviously loved. But it doesn’t take Jordan long to conclude that the strict lifestyle and the three hour church services are not for him.

But there isn’t just human interaction at play. Nathaniel, an angel of God, sees the potential in Jordan and Rachel’s hearts from heaven’s perspective. His goal is to shepherd them toward the path of healing and love.

When tragedy strikes, then strikes again, this angelic being is sent to guide them toward the healing and abundant life promised in God’s Word – if only they will listen.

MY THOUGHTS:

Rachel Hartzler is committed to being Amish, but she isn’t the typical young maedel you think of when you think “Amish”… she’s known in the community as a buggy racing champion, a field hand, and a terrible cook — just about everything a young Amish maedel is not supposed to be.

Jordan, whose mom left the Amish years ago to marry his father, comes to live in the community for a short time. He’s hired by Rachel’s father to help tend the fields so that Rachel can learn how to cook, clean, sew and quilt – whatever it will take for her to find a husband.

Rachel’s not happy… not only is she banned from helping outdoors, but she has never even been asked to ride home from a singing with one of the local Amish boys. And Jordan is convinced that the strict life of the Amish is not for him, besides the fact that he and Rachel are always at odds… except Jordan keeps eating – and complementing – her awful cooking.

Ruth Reid is the talented author of the Heaven on Earth series. She shares her own belief of the forces that inherit the spiritual realm of our world – a guardian angel watching over the main characters and a fallen angel trying to convince them to doubt God and abandon faith in Him.

Although the first book in this series, introducing an angelic presence, was unexpected… the second book — with a new look at how angels and demons are present and working to influence — or protect — us at any moment in our life and the lives of others — was a complete surprise – albeit a good one.

I had a hard time putting this book down! It really touched my heart! It was Thank you, Ruth, for this new perspective on the realm of angels.

I can’t wait to get to book 3 — An Angel By Her Side!

I can definitely recommend this series to everyone.

The Promise Of An Angel | Ruth Reid Marathon

Today I’m reviewing The Promise of an Angel, the first book in the Heaven on Earth series by the incomparable Ruth Reid.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Interrupting the ordered routine of the Mecosta County Amish settlement, an angelic visitor awakens Judith to a new faith.

All Judith Fischer ever wanted is to marry within her community and raise a family. She longs for the day when her parents will allow Levi Plank to officially court her.

But on the day Judith suspects Levi will ask her parent’s permission, her younger brother Samuel has an accident under her charge. Rushing to Samuel’s aid, Judith spies a strange man helping him; a man she later believes was an angel.

When she shares her conviction with her family and close friends, she is shocked to find that no one believes her, including Levi. In the days following the accident, the angel visits Judith with information that may guide her down the path of faith, should she choose to follow.

As her community slowly distances themselves, only one person is willing to stand up for her―the bishop’s son, Andrew Lapp. But can he convince the settlement to listen to her? With a show of faith that flies in the face of her conservative upbringing, can Judith hold strong to the promise that there are even greater things in store for those who believe in God’s miracles?

MY THOUGHTS:

The Promise of an Angel is amazing — stupendous — incredible! The story is so mesmerizing, I felt like I was there — seeing and hearing everything going on. Eventually, I began to feel like I was in the presence of an angel, too! The story is that powerful!

I began reading this story after everyone had gone to bed… I read late into the night, but eventually had to stop — in order to get a few hours of sleep. The next day at work I finished the book during my lunch break. By the time I was done, my emotions were so charged; I was shaking, with tears running down my cheeks! I quickly made a stop at the ladies’ room to wash my face before going back to my office.

Judith Fischer — I really like Judith! I especially like that she shares her experience with others, even though they don’t believe her — mostly because she’s known for making up stories — and she’s warned to stop talking about it. But really, if you had an encounter with an angel, could you keep quiet about it!

Of course she begins to wonder why her brother is paralyzed — the angel tells her to “have faith, Samuel’s steps are ordered by God.” Although she questions what this means, she believes God is telling her that Samuel will walk again, so she never really loses hope… or faith. Even after everyone tells her she’s crazy and she needs to accept God’s will, Judith still believes.

Ruth Reid is a FANTASTIC author!

I’ve been reading Amish fiction for years, but I never expected a story where a young Amish girl comes in contact with an angel. And the reaction from everyone in the community — except for Andrew Lapp — is the reason! I admit… I imagined it would be a bit “over the top” for a plain, humble community. But it was perfect!

This book really touched me. I can’t wait to get to book 2 — Brush of Angels Wings!

I will definitely recommend this series to everyone.
